Listening Skills (20-12-17)

How would you rate your listening skills? Maybe this is something that you have never thought about. For example, do you let people finish what they are saying before speaking? Do you stop what you are doing and pay attention to someone who is talking to you? Are you able to listen without giving advice? These skills may sound simple, however consider what you really do when next having a conversation with someone.

According to Stephen R. Covey…“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply”. This is quite a powerful statement. Pause for a moment and think about the meaning of these words. What is going on in our heads, regularly takes precedence over ‘hearing’ the person talking.

Improving our listening skills has many advantages, such as enhancing effective relationships, reducing misunderstandings, and building trust and respect.

As 2018 approaches, how will you move forward with the people that play an important role in your life? What possibilities, choices and changes are crucial for you to consider today and in the New Year?

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be” Ralph Waldo Emerson.
